POSITION NAME: On Call Substitute Teacher DEPARTMENT/GRADE LEVEL: Elementary, Middle, High School Division
RE PORTS TO: Division Dean E EFECTIVE DATE: 08-01-25
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The on-call substitute teacher ensures the smooth operation of a Catholic education program, supports the goals and spirit of Catholic education, delivers effective instruction, engages in professional development, and promotes student growth.

A substitute teacher is expected to have competencies in the following major areas:

A. Supports and implements the mission/philosophy of Catholic education and the school

II. INSTRUCTIONAL PROCESS
A. Demonstrates evidence of prior planning and preparation
B. Presents classes clearly and effectively
C. Demonstrates ability to motivate students
D. Maintains an atmosphere conducive to learning in both the physical environment and the learning atmosphere
E. Knows and uses technology appropriately in and during instruction
III. INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS
A. Works cooperatively with administration
B. Works positively with colleagues, support staff, and parish staff
C. Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations with students
IV. PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Follow and implement lesson plans provided by the regular teacher to ensure continuity in students' learning.
B. Manage the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions and maintain a positive learning environment.
C. Adjust teaching strategies to meet the needs of individual students.
D. Provide assignments based on the lesson plan and grade them as needed.
E. Reports any knowledge or suspicion of child abuse as required by law
F. Accepts, willingly, extra assignments and supervisions (e.g. lunch, playground, and/or dismissal)
G. Create reports to inform the regular teacher about student progress and any issues encountered.
H. Reviews fire and lockdown drills and emergency procedures and practices
I. For long-term substitutes: develop lesson plans and assignments consistent with the regular teacher’s past lesson plans
V. PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
A. Keeps abreast of developments in curriculum and methodology
B. Interacts with colleagues to further professional growth
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
B.Ed or equivalent
Experience in teaching at elementary level students or equivalent
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, talk, reach, sit, hear, handle, and perform repetitive motions of the hands/wrists. Teachers must be able to stand and/or sit for extended periods. May need to climb stairs and lift, carry, push and/or pull items up to 50 pounds. Must be able to respond effectively to, and lead the class in emergency situations.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is usually performed in a classroom setting within the time frame established by the School Dean. Employee is occasionally required to attend evening meetings and may oversee field trips and other special events.
SUPERVISION
Exercises working supervision over students as necessary.
