JOB DESCRIPTION

 

POSITION NAME: School Counselor DEPARTMENT/GRADE LEVEL: Middle Level (Grades 6-8)

REPORTS TO: Division Head/Vice President/Pastor EFFECTIVE DATE: August 1, 2020

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The teacher collaborates in the effective operation of a Catholic education program by supporting the goals and spirit of Catholic education in general and the school programs in particular; ensuring an effective instructional program; continuing in professional growth; encouraging student educational growth.

The school counselor is expected to have competencies in the following major areas:

 

I. COMMUNITY OF FAITH

A. Supports and implements the mission/philosophy of Catholic education and the school

B. Gives evidence of lived Gospel values

C. Participates in building faith community

 

II. INSTRUCTIONAL PROCESS

A. Develop and deliver the school counseling curriculum in a classroom setting

B. Consult and collaborate with teachers, staff and parents in understanding and meeting the needs of students in the school setting

C. Assists students in the areas of academic achievement and in personal/social/emotional development

D. Makes appropriate referrals of students and parents to outside agencies and specialists, if necessary

E. Demonstrates ability to motivate students

F. Maintains an atmosphere conducive to learning in both the physical environment and the learning atmosphere

G. Promote an understanding and appreciation of diverse populations and cultures

H. Prepare students for the transition to the next school level (high school level)

 

III. INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS

A. Works cooperatively with administration

B. Works positively with colleagues, support staff, and parish staff

C. Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations with students

D. Maintains positive interpersonal relations with parents

 

IV. PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Maintains a professional manner in the classroom and other related settings

B. Follows all school procedures and policies

C. Demonstrates professional responsibility and leadership

D. Reports any knowledge or suspicion of child abuse as required by law

E. Accepts, willingly, extra assignments and supervisions (e.g. lunch, playground, and/or dismissal)

F. Attends all faculty meetings, in-services, and other meetings and events as specified by the principal unless excused by the principal prior to the meeting or event

G. Is responsible for the care and use of instructional materials, equipment, and school facilities

H. Reviews fire and lockdown drills and emergency procedures and practices with students regularly

I. Provides necessary documentation for personnel file

J. Follows directives regarding collection of monies

A. Pursue continuous professional growth to stay abreast of the field

B. Interacts with colleagues to further professional growth

C. Takes advantage of opportunities for professional improvement

D. Completes necessary work toward obtaining and/or maintaining a valid teaching license

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A. College Graduate

B. Holds a valid teaching license as set forth by the Hawaii Catholic Diocese.

C. Minimum of 5 years experience in school counseling or equivalent in work-related experience

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, talk, reach, sit, hear, handle, and perform repetitive motions of the hands/wrists. Teachers must be able to stand and/or sit for extended periods. May need to climb stairs and lift, carry, push and/or pull items up to 50 pounds. Must be able to respond effectively to and lead the class in emergency situations.

 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is usually performed in a classroom setting within the time frame established by the principal. Employee is occasionally required to attend weekend and evening meetings and may oversee field trips and other special events.

 

SUPERVISION

Exercises working supervision over students and volunteers, as necessary.
