Editor & Director – Hawaii Catholic Herald
Vision of Responsibilities:
The Editor represents the evangelical and communications mission and message of the Bishop and Diocese of Honolulu. The Editor of the Hawaii Catholic Herald oversees the production, distribution and promotion of the printed bi-weekly diocesan newspaper and its related digital forms, providing, procuring, editing and presenting its content.
Reports to: Bishop of Honolulu Classification: Exempt
Position Summary
● Editorial/Content
o Writes, assigns and edits local stories and other content, news releases and photos. Scans news service stories and photos and downloads selected content for publication.
o Designs and lays out Hawaii Catholic Herald pages, oversees staff proofing of the paper and process for printing on press day.
o Manages parish and school news reporters, local and selected columnists, and other feature content.
o Oversees hawaiicatholicherald.com, digital media (blog, podcast, e-newsletter) and social media.
o Identifies means to incorporate other ministries (Youth, Young Adult Ministries).
● Operations
o Leads and manages Hawaii Catholic Herald staff. Supports opportunities for professional development and growth. Responsible for promoting a healthy workplace culture and environment.
o Drafts and manages the annual Hawaii Catholic Herald budget and meets projected goals.
o Designs Hawaii Catholic Herald parish subscription plan, manages operations of Circulation Manager, keeps subscription/circulation software program operating. Sets subscription prices.
o Establishes advertising goals and objectives, always consistent with Catholic teaching and values; designs advertising programs, advertising rates, and marketing to effectively support the Catholic Herald.
o Writes donor appeal and thank you letters.
o Cultivates and maintains good relationships with vendors.
● Public Relations
o Develops and implements effective strategy for communications and public relations including reviewing and releasing information to the public as required.
o Collaborates with key stakeholders and teams to ensure consistent messaging across all channels of communication.
o Establishes and cultivates relationships with media industry professionals.
o Serves as point person for outside inquiries and interview requests.
o Coordinates public relations functions.
Minimum Qualifications
● Practicing Catholic in good standing and basic knowledge of Catholic doctrine essential
● Bachelor’s or advanced degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or similar field required
● Two years supervisory experience required, basic understanding of vendor and/or employee performance management
● Familiarity with sound contract and fiscal management practices
● Proficient in the use of apps and programs suited to the publication, production, and promotion of digital and print communications
● Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Bridge)
