Director of Hawai'i History Day

The Hawaiʻi History Day Director runs our Hawaiʻi History Day (HHD) Program. This program currently reaches approx 70 teachers and 120 volunteer judges, on five islands. They manage seasonal support staff, contract help, and volunteers to conduct  our annual district and state Hawaiʻi History Day fairs as the state affiliate to National History Day (NHD). They gather data and evaluation information for NHD and NEH reports. They conduct outreach visits and classroom help for teachers and schools statewide. They create outreach materials, program materials, and curriculum materials for the HHD fairs, including materials centering cultural communities important to our islands, and Hawaiian language. The HHD Director is an energetic, organized, warm, and welcoming person, who loves history education and the communities of Hawaiʻi. They communicate well with teachers, youth and their families, and school administrators.

Reports to: Deputy Director

Supervises: Hawaiʻi History Day District Coordinators, Hawaii History Day Historian Consultants; Hawai'i History Day State Coordinator/Assistant; seasonal support staff/interns.

Main kuleana for job:

  1. Program: oversees the HHD contests in Hawaiʻi from Jan - April every year, including running the online NHD contest management system.
  2. Program: runs the HHD State Fair in April of every year. Assists with HHD District Fairs (Jan - March).
  3. Program: oversees Historian Consultant contractors to run District Fairs, and assists as needed.
  4. Program: oversee all the logistics for the annual NHD contest trip to College Park, Maryland in June
  5. Program: oversee the growing HHD ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi category statewide.
  6. Knowledge of field: maintains familiarity with NHD policies and resource materials. Drafts reports to NHD as required.
  7. Knowledge of field: represents Hawaiʻi History Day at NHD meetings and trainings as needed.
  8. Knowledge of field: Maintains familiarity with state and national educational humanities standards and policies.
  9. Budget: develops and manages program budget, ensuring timely payments to contractors and consultants, etc. Works with development and other staff to generate new sources of support. Tracks in-kind support.
  10. Outreach: creates and distributes NHD program and contest materials to teachers and students via website and hard copy.
  11. Outreach: makes a minimum of 20 school visits statewide every year, to share about the NHD program and increase school/teacher/student participation
    1. Able to present NHD content/theme/skills workshops
    2. Able to share general outreach about the program
  12. Outreach: creates outreach materials for teachers and students.  
  13. Outreach: works with Development staff to create outreach materials for funders and community partners. Build and maintain relationships with partners who provide HHD Special Awards.  
  14. Outreach: works with Communications staff to send out HHD e-newsletter and to keep  the Hawaiʻi History Day website updated and relevant.
  15. Outreach: warm and enthusiastic spokesperson for Hawaiʻi History Day. Can make presentations to different stakeholders (judges, community sponsors, students, teachers) as well as media
  16. Evaluation: developes annual goals and plans of action for program
  17. Evaluation: develops quantitative and qualitative evaluation materials and processes to understand/measure effectiveness of program
  18. Evaluation: gathers quantitative and qualitative feedback from participants in NHD (teachers and students). Maintains NHD databases, and creates reports as directed.
  19. Other duties as assigned.
  20. Opportunity to run a special humanities program as workload permits (approved by supervisor)

 

Required skills / experience:

  1. Open, flexible, and responsive leader, able to maintain relationships with respect and care, especially in our education and public humanities community. Minimum of two years of team management experience.
  2. Excellent time management and organizational skills. Able to prioritize and handle multiple projects and deadlines with accuracy, and activate a team to complete complex tasks. Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks. Detail-oriented and highly organized. 
  3. Ability to communicate in a warm and inspiring way with diverse audiences, including youth, teachers, and community and civic leaders.  
  4. Valid driver’s license and own mode of transportation. 
  5. Possesses a love for history and the humanities. 
  6. Master’s degree in education, history or other humanities discipline, or equivalent work experience at public history organizations, schools, colleges, or universities. 
  7. Minimum of 2 years experience working with middle school or high school youth.  
  8. Knowledge of state and national social studies standards.  
  9. Experience working with or managing volunteers.
  10. Familiarity with spreadsheets (Excel/Google sheets) and able to work with databases.
  11. Familiarity with webpage management and design (Wordpress)
  12. Astute evaluator, and can collect and report on quantitative and qualitative data about impact. Strong equity analysis.

  • Travel/location: Applicants must be available for office work in Honolulu, O‘ahu. Position requires regular neighbor island travel throughout the year.
